Two new loudspeaker drivers


For some time now, it’s been common practice here to introduce a new chassis as soon as it arrives, in the form of clever building suggestions that the world never knew it urgently needed. Naturally, that was the plan for the AXPs in the Gradient Axis series, too, but sometimes our plans don’t quite match up with reality. It’s not that our wealth of ideas – one of our most valuable assets – has dried up; we just don’t have the time to implement it with a power chassis in a well-designed wooden crate. So once again we’re turning an emergency into a virtue and going back to the long-forgotten “chassis test” category, even if there are only two test candidates ready for the measurement wall.

All of the measurements are taken under the same conditions on our measurement wall, which at 1.40 x 2 m deviates slightly from the IEC norm but provides unbiased results. The chassis to be tested is screwed flush into a 19-mm MDF board measuring 40 x 40 cm, with its midpoint at a height of 1.4 m. The microphone is 0.5 m from the chassis axis, so it is also 1.4 m above the ground, which is the closest reflective surface. Behind the wall is 0.55 m of air, which was covered with stone wool all around the chassis. In order to normalize the representation of the amplitude at the “normal” distance of 1 m, the volume is reduced by 6 dB. Distortion is recorded at the actual level of 90 dB/ 1 m, and is given in both percent and dB. That means no one needs to use our conversion tools in the “Workshop practice guide.” 
Both of the chassis models come from the Gradient Axis series and are distinguished by a very high output of 93 dB/ 2.83 V/ 1 m within the usable range. A slight coupling with the tweeter, which has not yet been presented here, suggests that they could even reach more than 100 dB higher up, to about 10 kHz. Still, they are not PA loudspeakers – those hardly exist at this size. At six and eight inches, the drivers are small, so they can be put into living-room-friendly cabinets. We cannot expect an enormous, deep bass from them, since that isn’t compatible with the quality of being loud. The structure is identical except for the exterior dimensions: a waterproofed lightweight paper membrane and a die-cast basket with a raised centering bracket that is ventilated with eight holes. The pole core has only a small opening, so the magnet system with its #120 ring and #20 height is not compromised. Solid gold-plated pole clamps may be more for the benefit of the eye, while the dual arched linen surround ensures its fault-free functioning as a power chassis. What is unusual, as with all of the Gradients, is the price of less than 50 euros for 2.5-kg loudspeakers that we could already in good conscience say looked pretty good. Since the measurements are fairly positive too, we are already looking forward to the building kits that will result.
